Seedtrace makes entire line of nut spreads traceable until the origin: Transparency project with organic pioneer Davert

Blog Post Image

Berlin, 3 September 2024 – The traceability provider Seedtrace is implementing transparency and traceability in the supply chain of a product line from the Davert brand. The supply chain and sustainability data for a collection of seven nut butter varieties, including two new launches, will be accessible.

Consumers can track the journey of the ingredients using a QR code on the packaging or on digital channels. The launch will take place in the Davert online shop and in retail chains across Germany such as dm, REWE, Kaufland and Denns BioMarkt.

Value chain as a competitive factor

As social and environmental impacts become increasingly important in the value chain, Midsona, the company behind Davert, is sending a strong signal to retailers. According to a Capgemini study (2023), 86 percent of consumer goods and retail companies recognise that responsible sourcing is a decisive competitive advantage - significantly more than in 2020 (69 percent). The basic prerequisite for this is transparency.

Provable sustainability in the supply chain

With Seedtrace, Midsona collects, digitises and analyses supply chain information and sustainability data and can pass it on to downstream stakeholders in a targeted manner. The tracing project started with the supply chain mapping of 15 raw materials for the nut butter line. The individual processing steps from harvesting to manufacturing the final products were mapped and enriched with relevant sustainability data from the origin in order to make social and environmental criteria such as fair payment with living wages and deforestation risks measurable. Dynamic data was recorded at batch level for the main ingredients almonds, cashews and peanuts.

“The fact that we were able to create such in-depth visibility in the supply chain with Midsona and make the impact of every single purchase from suppliers traceable is a real milestone for the food industry. This important transparency and collaboration between stakeholders provides the basis for conscious sourcing decisions and the data for all CSR and compliance reporting requirements”, explains Ana Selina Haberbosch, CEO and Co-Founder of Seedtrace.

Davert's engagement for sustainability

With the initiative ‘Exploring the Origin’, Midsona is responding to the growing need of business partners and consumers to find out more about the origin of the raw materials and invites them on an interactive product journey in which the supply chains are presented in an understandable and transparent way – from the origin to the factory in Ascheberg.

Heiko Hintze, Managing Director/CEO at Midsona, comments: ”We are convinced that the future lies in product transparency. With our "Exploring the Origin" project, we are taking the use of first-mile data and traceability to a new level and creating important momentum in retail that goes beyond certifications. Our suppliers welcome the initiative, as they are also recognising the increased demand for data collection and transparency."

Background and outlook

The project follows a cooperation with the Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ), the Gesellschaft für internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and sequa. Seedtrace analysed the supply chains of several SMEs with regard to risks and preparation for the German Supply Chain Due Diligence Act (LkSG). With the motivation to look deeper into the supply chain and take on more responsibility, Midsona and four strategic suppliers signed a Transparency Commitment at the BioFach trade fair in February 2024. Half a year later, the main ingredients of the nut butter varieties are already traceable. The introduction marks the start of a continuous commitment. Two more products will follow by the end of the year.
